The 3/8th mile asphalt oval of Shenandoah Speedway regularly hosts very competitive Bandolero races for the younger drivers. This past Saturday night was no exception.
AB Motorsports racer Jason Alder was the second fastest in both of the practice sessions among the 6 talented drivers with a laptime of 19.998 seconds just 0.081 seconds behind the #07 driver, DJ Elzey in the first round of practice and just 0.009 seconds behind Elzey in the second round of practice who had a fastest laptime of 20.022 seconds. However, when it counted, Jason Alder was the fastest in qualifying with a laptime of 19.954 seconds which was 0.044 seconds faster than DJ Elzey. This was Jason Alder's first bandolero pole award of his young career.
Starting on the pole in the feature race, Jason lead the first lap but in the middle of turn 2, the #07 driver, DJ Elzey bumped Jason sending him into a spin bringing out the first caution of the race. Elzey was penalized for the incident and restarted in the 6th position with Jason starting in the 5th position. At the drop of the green flag, Jason charged his way forward and in only 2 laps, regained the lead with #07 car in his rear view mirror. Jason led for a single lap before DJ Elzey made the pass on Jason as he entered turns 3 and 4. Jason entered the turn a little wide allowing for the #07 driver to get on the inside of him and take the lead.
Elzey would lead until a caution came out with four laps to go after a lapped car spun out. Jason got a good restart and regained the lead but was passed by the #07 driver in the middle of turn 3 and 4. The #23 and #31 cars followed the #07 dropping Jason back to 4th place with only 3 laps to go. Jason passed the #31 car with 2 laps to go and crossed the finish line at the checkered side by side with the #23 car. The #23 car was scored in second and Jason was scored in third place.
This is Jason's second podium finish in two bandolero races. "I am very excited to finish in the top 3 again. It's a lot of fun to has a fast car and be able to pass cars on the track" said Jason Alder in a post-race interview. "Thanks to our sponsors for supporting us this year including Champion Spark Plugs, Hat Automotive, 2020 Teknology, and Boca Bearing Company. I also appreciate all the work of our charity of choice, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation," said Jason.
The video of this race is posted on the ABMotorsports YouTube channel.
Next up for the bandolero is July 31, 2015 at Bowmen Gray for the Racing Electronics Night presented by Q104.1 New Country Bandolero race.
